Hiking to the Summit

Hiking to the Summit

This is a demanding but highly rewarding route, offering breathtaking views and historical landmarks throughout.

Your first stop is the Byzantine Church of Agios Nikolaos Megalomatis, part of a flourishing 18th-century monastic complex. Today it stands in ruins, yet remains a fascinating point of interest on the way to the Monastery of Panagia Skopiotissa.

Its strategic location offers panoramic views of the Ionian Sea, the coastline of the Peloponnese, and the Castle of Kyllini in the distance. Looking out over the Vasilikos peninsula, historically connected to Byzantine imperial estates, the site holds both historical and natural significance.

A little further on, look for an ancient spring hidden among the trees. The area is lush, cool, and shaded. The spring water is well known for its beneficial digestive properties.

Continuing along the trail, you will reach the cantina, an ideal spot to enjoy a refreshing drink and congratulate yourself on your progress. From there, it is only a 5–10 minute walk to the Monastery of Skopiotissa.

Once you arrive at the monastery, there are a few additional short trails worth exploring:

A. Circular Route – A loop trail that brings you back to the monastery.

B. The Giant Rocks – Passing the church, you reach a spot with enormous rocks that you can climb. A rope is available for assistance, but a good level of fitness is required. If you reach the top, the view will fully reward your effort.

C. Pageroxylo Hill – A small hill that was historically used as a lookout point for sea invaders. A large flag once stood there to alert the island’s inhabitants. Today, it offers some of the most impressive views of Skopos.

A Quick Safety Note

The summer heat in Zakynthos can be intense, so we recommend starting these hikes early in the morning or late in the afternoon to ensure a safe and comfortable experience. Make sure to wear proper footwear, carry enough water, bring some snacks, and take regular breaks to fully enjoy the journey.

Enjoy your exploration and let the adventure begin!
